bullet  Augustine Background -- BLITHEWOLD GARDENS AND ARBORETUM -- Midway between Providence and Newport, on a 33-acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay, Blithewood was built as a summer home by Mrs. William Mckee, widow of Pennsylvania coal baron Augustus Van Wickle. The house was completed in 1908, containing 45 rooms. Designed in the style of a 17th century manor house, it exemplifies America's early 20th century fascination with historical European architectural styles. The document here named "Augustine" hangs in a bedroom and dates from that period. The property has since been donated to the Heritage Trust of Rhode Island, and the gardens, which contain the oldest Giant Sequoia tress east of the Rocky Mountains, are open year round to the public.
